PLA vs PETG for Toys: What We Use and Why
As an Application Engineer-run print shop, material choice is something we obsess over. Here's our simple breakdown of PLA vs PETG and what we use for each product type at DJM 3D.
Quick comparison
| | PLA | PETG |
|---|---|---|
| Detail | Excellent | Good |
| Strength | Good | Better |
| Heat resistance | Low (warps in hot cars) | Higher |
| Eco angle | Plant-based | Petroleum-based, but tougher |
| Best for | Toys, fidgets, decor | Functional parts, brackets, holders |
What we use for toys
PLA. Our fidgets, flexis, Halloween decor, and fantasy minis are all PLA. Why? It holds the crisp details that make a flexi dragon look great, comes in vibrant colors, and is plant-based. For a desk toy that lives at room temperature, it's the right tool.
What we use for functional parts
PETG. When we design brackets, mounts, tool holders, or repair parts, we switch to PETG. It handles more heat and stress — important for a part that holds weight or lives near a printer.
We also offer ASA/ABS for the toughest jobs (it needs an enclosure, which we have).
Our filament testing
This is where our Filament Engineering service comes from. We don't just buy whatever's cheapest — we test new filaments for dimensional accuracy, layer adhesion, and color consistency before they touch your order. If a spool doesn't pass, it doesn't print.
So which should you choose for a custom part?
- Decorative or kid-facing? Start with PLA.
- Holds weight, lives in a garage, or near heat? PETG.
- Not sure? That's literally what our Design Engineering Parts service is for — send us your use case and we'll spec it.
