How to Clean 3D Printed Toys (PLA Safe Guide)

We get this question a lot at our shop: "How do I clean my 3D printed fidget?" Here's the safe way we recommend for all DJM 3D toys.

What our toys are made of

We print our toys and fidgets from plant-based PLA — chosen to be as eco-friendly as possible while holding crisp detail. PLA is great for toys, but it's sensitive to high heat, so cleaning needs a gentle touch.

The safe way (do this)

  • Dampen a soft cloth with lukewarm water + a drop of mild dish soap
  • Wipe all surfaces, getting into grooves
  • Rinse the cloth and wipe again to remove soap
  • Air dry completely before storing

That's it. For most fidgets, this takes under a minute.

What to avoid

  • No dishwasher. The heat will warp PLA.
  • No boiling water or hot soaking. Same reason — warping.
  • No harsh chemicals like bleach or acetone. They can dull colors and weaken layer bonds.
  • No scrub brushes with stiff bristles on detailed parts.

When to replace

If a toy has been chewed, cracked, or left in a hot car and warped, it's time for a fresh one. Small parts can be a choking hazard for little kids, so check regularly.

Why we print in PLA

We chose PLA for our toy line because it prints with excellent detail for those intricate flexi segments and gives vibrant colors. For functional parts that need heat resistance, we use PETG — different tool for a different job.
